The three primary partner institutions include the Institute for Community Research (ICR), the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine (UCONN SDM) and the North Central Area Agency on Aging (NCAAA). The Institute for Community Research is an independent multimillion dollar NIH funded community based research organization with nearly two decades of collaborative prevention and translational research experience in Connecticut, elsewhere in the U.S. and internationally, in China, and India. Four such studies since 2001 have focused on older minority and low income adults residing in senior housing in the Greater Hartford area and one of them involved a partnership with the UCHC Center on Aging. The University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine is a prominent national leader in dental education, research, patient care and community outreach. The School is an integral member of the University of Connecticut Health Center complex which is a vibrant organization composed of the School of Medicine, SDM, the Graduate School, John Dempsey Hospital, and outpatient medical and dental services. Advancing research is central to the mission of the UCONN SDM and these efforts occupy a prominent place among the priorities and accomplishments of the School’s students, residents, and faculty. Active research grants to the School exceed $8 million annually. The School serves approximately 8000 geriatric patients annually through its student dental clinics. The NCAAA, the Community Research Associate Agency, was founded in 1971. Since that time NCAAA has played an active role in promoting the well being of older adults in the 39 towns in central Connecticut as well as funding many programs related to elderly nutritional, financial and general well being. NCAAA has had a strong commitment to partnering in studies, both with ICR and with state universities, providing access to community and institutionalized older adults. At times, NCAAA has complemented studies with intervention-related supplemental funding.
